GUEST ODOP: We have no prairies

When we burned through our word-and-question prompts, we turned to the exercise of finding first lines of pre-existing poems and then submitting those lines to each other. I gave Lelo “We have no prairies” from Seamus Heaney’s “Bogland,” and

We have no prairies
(fucking wastes of space).
Damn the endless floating grasses
insect-infested, gopher-overrun,
the leering rays roasting us to death

but we drew up city grids
and held gopher-gassing block parties
until in the aftermath
each gleaming urban inch sparkled pristine.

Productivity increased.
