ODOP: epicurus defied

I got the prompt from today’s poem by random-ing on TV Tropes and getting Friendly Neighborhood Vampires. The reason it became all “lover-ly” is because the description claims that FNVs are sometimes portrayed as “Star Crossed Lovers” (??) I don’t recall any such examples from my own media experiences, but, when your goal is One Day, One Poem, you can’t be too picky about inspiration.

Anyway the TV Tropes item inspired a lot of bad puns. I showed heroic restraint by not putting all of them in here.

Carpe the bloody diem,
They told me, and forget
Her lily-thin cheeks
Rebels don’t regret

When you live in the moment
You live in any moment…
Right.
Coz that’s romantic.

And so I left the bloody diem
Left it exactly as it was.
It’s still waiting on me,
Its neck exposed.

Our past burning on high pyres —
Hand and hand, we stalk away,
And fly off, you and I
To suck the morrow from today.

I sit on the rim but I’m facing in—
And damn! You people’s daily deeds,
Endless, tiny pulses—
Done with such celerity
And such coordination!

ODOP: Joanna, Slip Given

Joanna the Mad, dressed in kirtles red,
Traipsed from the Escorial half-bare.
She laughed at her feet growing red in the snow,
And gave never a thought for St. Claire.

ODOP: Insignificant Limerick

There once was a boy named Gilgamesh
Who loved to feast on griffin flesh
Dinner tray on his knee
He pushed some towards me
But I demurred that I preferred it fresh.

ODOP: Indignation

This poem’s title is actually “Clay’s Song.” It’s part of a series I’m working on, where each poem is a different character’s outtake from my WIP novel.

The novel is speculative fiction, dealing with a government’s latest attempt to handle the problem of a supernatural affliction amongst its citizenry.

The latest government efforts aim to be very humane. Our friend Clay here is most definitely not the protagonist of the story, but, like the protagonist, he doesn’t really respond to the initiative with the gratitude that the powers that be expected.

REC: Jon Sanders’s Top 50

I like to snark about poetry—it doesn’t get nearly as much snark as it should because it has a sacrosanct air of “high art” and “personal expression” about it. To counter this, I thought I would launch my poetry reviews by examining some celebrities’ poetry with brutal honesty.

(Un?)fortunately for me, as I have been slowly trawling through internet poetry blogs, I’ve actually found some of that 5% of poetry that’s enjoyable. Read the rest of this entry »
